After attending Cretin High School, he graduated from the University of Minnesota. In 1951 he married Nina Klundt and they moved to Rochester in 1956 to raise their four children. He worked at IBM for 34 years where he held a variety of technical, administrative, and executive management positions. At the time of retirement he was Manager of External Programs for IBM in the state of Minnesota. It was at IBM where he honed his technique for telling what his children called “IBM jokes”.

He held many volunteer positions for various civic and professional organizations, including the U of M Rochester Regents Advisory Board, the Greater Rochester Area University Center Board, Governor’s Advisory Council for MnSCU Board Trustees, and Board of Governors for the U of M Health System. He put many miles on his old green “caddy” traveling to St. Paul and other cities in SE Minnesota to attend hundreds of board meetings which he thoroughly enjoyed. Other community activities include the Olmsted County Historical Society, Rochester Symphony, and many political organizations and campaigns. Some people say he should have run for mayor. If an organization needed someone for their finance committee, he would gladly help out.
Don was an avid sports fan, especially his beloved Minnesota Gophers and the Twins. He coached youth baseball and was a founding member of the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission and served on its board of directors. He followed the sports pages in three newspapers daily. As a loving family man, he was active in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
