Dorothy “Dottie” Gressett Luibel was born in Columbus, Georgia on March 16, 1926. She grew up in Fort Worth, TX. She attended Our Lady of Victory High School, St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, and Texas Christian University. She was employed as a Flight Nurse for commercial airlines, flying from NYC to Europe and Los Angeles to Tokyo via Hawaii and Wake Island.
In 1956 she started working for a Workman’s Compensation insurance company out of Dallas, TX. There she accompanied injured clients to rehab centers in other states for physical and vocational training.
In 1957 she married John Gressett, Sr. and their first son, John Gressett Jr., was born in Corpus Christi, TX on August 9, 1958. Several years later they moved to Boulder, CO to attend graduate school where they both received their Master’s Degrees. The following year John Gressett attended Denver University to earn a Doctorate degree. Their second child, Salette Gressett, was born May 10, 1967 in Denver, CO. They moved to Tomah, WI in 1970 where Dorothy worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital as a psychiatric nurse and nursing instructor. Dr. Gressett died of a heart attack in 1982.
Twenty years later, Dorothy married Dr. Joseph Luibel. They enjoyed traveling, visiting the Antarctic, Alaska and Tanzania. Dr. Luibel died in 2005. She moved to Rochester, MN in 2006 to be closer to family.
Mrs. Luibel was active with the American Red Cross as a volunteer for over forty years. She worked in local disasters as well as others throughout the United States. She was a member of the Serra Club International – Rochester Branch, St. Pius X Catholic Church choir, and several book review clubs.
Mrs. Luibel is survived by a son, John Gressett, wife Beth Kosta Gressett and their children, David and Monica, all of Rochester, MN and her daughter Salette Gressett of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by numerous other extended family members and friends who cherish the time they were able to spend with her.
Dorothy’s faith was always held close to her heart. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 16th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester, MN, officiated by Monsignor Donald P. Schmitz. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church, and a luncheon will follow. Interment is expected to be at the Dallas-Forth Worth National Cemetery on June 21st.
