Alex David Grannis Schmidt, age 23, of Rochester, MN passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 24th, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after a year-long battle with glioblastoma. He fought with great courage and a quiet dignity. Alex was born April 5, 1997 in Rochester, MN the son of Bryan and Natalie (Horsman) Schmidt. He was a 2015 graduate of John Marshall High School where he played hockey, baseball, and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in lacrosse. He continued playing lacrosse for the Bulldogs at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He graduated from UMD with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in Spanish. Alex returned home to Rochester and accepted a position at Mayo Clinic as a lab technician in the Clinical Forensic Toxicology Lab. Alex enjoyed hiking, fishing, traveling, rollerblading, hammocking, watching the Minnesota Wild, boating, and spending time with family and friends. As the oldest brother, he always made time to support his younger siblings in their activities. He is survived by his parents, Bryan and Natalie Schmidt of Rochester, MN; four younger siblings, Andrew, Brady, Jake, and Ava Schmidt of Rochester, MN; grandparents, Dave and Ann Horsman of Pine Island, MN; Steve and Christy Schmidt of Mazeppa, MN; many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends. Alex will forever be remembered for his kind heart, selfless nature, unique sense of humor, strong work ethic, and for always putting his heart and soul into doing the right thing. There are not enough words to describe the profound loss felt by his family and loved ones at this time. Visitation will be held 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 29, 2021 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester, MN. Due to the current health concerns and restrictions, please respect the wearing of face masks and social distance both at the visitation and funeral. Burial will be at Oronoco Cemetery.
