Daryl Hovey

June 9, 1936 — November 7, 2025

Daryl Dean Hovey, age 89, of Sebring, Florida, formerly of Byron, Minnesota, passed away on November 7, 2025, in Sebring.

Born on June 9, 1936, in Rochester, Minnesota, Daryl grew up in Byron and following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army—a decision that would shape the course of his life. It was during his early years of service that he met Wilma “Billie” Hillman. The two were married on March 15, 1958, and together they raised three sons.

Daryl served his country with distinction for 20 years. His military career took him across the globe to Korea, Germany, Greenland, and Vietnam. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Rising through the ranks to become a Command Sergeant Major, Daryl concluded his military service as an Army recruiter overseeing operations throughout the upper Midwest.

After retiring from the Army, Daryl returned to Byron and began a second career with the United States Postal Service. He dedicated another 20 years to public service before eventually relocating to Sun Ray and later Sebring, Florida.

Following the passing of his beloved wife Billie, Daryl found companionship again with Ruby. They were married on July 4, 2009, and made their home at the Bluffs in Sebring. Together they enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending time with family and friends—activities that brought Daryl great joy.

Daryl was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Billie; parents Knute and Mildred Hovey; sons Dennis and Mitchel; and great-grandson Jack Fogel.

Daryl is survived by his wife of 16 years, Ruby; son Daryl (Lydia) Live Oak California; daughter-inlaw Nancy Hovey, Rochester Minnesota; grandsons Josh (Jessica Behnken), Jorden; granddaughters Holly, Haley (Jack) Copelin, Taylar (Daniel) King, Lindsey (Cassie Quadrelli); great-grandchildren Jace, Kensley, Brody, Haisley, Flynn, Luke; brothers Dave (Gail), Al (Mary), Gene (Judy); sister Sue (Larry) Briske; and several nephews and nieces.

Inurnment with full military honors took place on December 4, 2025, at Sarasota National Cemetery in Florida.
