David Newman

David F. Newman, age 92, of Rochester, MN died Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Season's Hospice House in Rochester, MN with his loving family by his side. David Franklin Newman was born June 11, 1928 in Cloquet, MN the son of Frank and Edith (Nelson) Newman. He was baptized on July 1, 1928 at Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet and confirmed on September 26, 1942 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Duluth. He was a 1946 graduate of Duluth Central High School and National Honor Society member. In 1950, he graduated Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Math and minor in Biostatistics and member of the Acacia Fraternity. He continued his education at Rutgers University and graduated in 1960 with a MS in Applied Statistics. David enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1952. He was united in marriage to Joyce Schmalz on June 16, 1951 in Dundalk, MD. They lived in Rochester, MN from 1957 to 1986 and then Sand Prairie on the Mississippi near Wabasha. In 1996, they returned to Rochester. David worked for Northwest Paper Co. in Cloquet, MN, Kearfott Mfg. Co. in Newark, NJ, Colgate Palmolive Co in Jersey City, NJ, and IBM in Rochester, MN from 1957 to 1986. After his retirement, he worked for Mutual of Omaha, H &R Block in Wabasha, MN and ATA Tax Service in Rochester, MN. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in East Orange NJ where he served on the Board of Deacons, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN, Faith Lutheran of Wabasha where he served as treasurer. In 1997 he became a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church and served on the Finance Committee from 1998-2002. He was a member of the American Legion Post #92, Korean War Veterans Club, IBM Quarter Century Club, and a founding member of JM Booster Club and served as President in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Newman of Rochester, MN; children, Mikael (Carol) Newman of Rochester, MN, Lisa (Mark) Menke of Annandale, MN; two grandchildren, Megan (Dan) Sandgren of Wyoming, MN and Jason (Samantha) Born of Rochester, MN three great grandchildren, Emilia and Elizabeth Sandgren, Bennett Born; brother, James (Nancy) Newman of Maple Grove, MN and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Richard Ringsred. Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Zumbro Lutheran Church 624 3rd Ave. SW, Rochester, MN with Rev. Vern Christopherson officiating. The service will be livestreamed at www.zumbrolutheran.org . Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors.
