Douglas Dell Johnson, 84, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Rochester Rehabilitation and Living Center.
Doug was born on February 13, 1942, in Wadena, Minnesota, to Wesley and Margaret (Anderson) Johnson. He built a long and successful career in the lumber industry, working his way from draftsman to vice president of marketing at United Building Centers. Doug married Melba Matson on December 17, 1966, and they shared more than 53 years together before her passing on January 3, 2020. Doug and Melba made their home in Winona before relocating to Rochester to be closer to his son Chris and his family.
Doug had many interests and found joy in sharing them with those he loved. He had a passion for photography and videography, especially capturing treasured moments with his grandchildren, Melba's beautiful flower garden, and trains. He enjoyed creating entertaining DVDs for family, preserving memories and bringing smiles to those around him. Doug also loved building and collecting realistic HO model trains, a hobby that reflected his patience, creativity, and eye for detail. He was also an avid stamp collector, appreciating the history and stories found in each piece.
In his later years at the Homestead of Rochester, Doug stayed active and connected. He enjoyed speeding around on his electric scooter, visiting with neighbors, admiring the flower gardens, and taking car rides with Chris to enjoy the changing scenery.
Douglas is survived by his sons, Christopher (Amy) Johnson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Chad (Carin) Manbeck of Burnsville, Minnesota; four beloved grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Clara, and Aaron; his brother, Glenn Johnson of Superior, Wisconsin; his sister, Debbie Bjerke of Alexandria, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Melba Johnson; his parents, Wesley and Margaret Johnson; and his sister, Toni Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 2815 57th St. NW, Rochester, MN. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
