Duane Edward Grafe

May 26, 1935 — Jun 22, 2026

Duane Grafe, 91, passed away peacefully on June 22nd, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Curlew, Iowa, on May 26, 1935, Duane spent his early years in Iowa before moving to Grand Meadow at the age of 15. It was there that he attended school and began building the foundation for a life marked by hard work, leadership, service, and an unwavering commitment to family.

At age 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and completed basic training in San Diego. His military service instilled in him the values of discipline, patriotism, and perseverance that would remain with him throughout his life. Decades later, he continued his dedication to fellow veterans through his service as Commander of the Korean War Veterans organization in Rochester, MN for the past ten years.

Following his military service, Duane began his civilian career with IBM. On what he often described as a bet, a whim, and a prayer, he then made the decision to attend Reisch Auction School in Mason City. That leap of faith would forever change the course of his life.

In 1959, Duane founded Grafe Auction Company, establishing what would become one of the most respected names in the auction industry. Through vision, determination, and an unmatched ability to connect with people, he built not only a successful business but a lasting legacy. Over the decades, he became well known in the auction community, admired for his integrity, professionalism, and quick wit.

He was known for mastering the art of the deal and having an innate ability to build meaningful relationships. His success was never measured solely by business accomplishments but by the trust, friendships, and respect he earned throughout his career.

Duane embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved traveling, meeting new people, and creating unforgettable memories with family and friends. He approached life with optimism, and a willingness to seize every opportunity that came his way.

A proud patriot, respected businessman, devoted veteran, and community leader, he was above all else a family man. His family was the center of his world and his greatest source of pride. He shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Sarah Grafe, whose love and partnership were among his greatest blessings. Together they built a family rooted in unconditional love.

Nothing brought him greater happiness than gathering with family, celebrating milestones, sharing stories, and watching future generations grow and thrive.

Those fortunate enough to know Duane will remember his larger-than-life personality, infectious enthusiasm, remarkable storytelling, love of country, and unwavering devotion to family. He lived boldly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

While his passing leaves a tremendous void, his legacy lives on through the family he cherished, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

Duane is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah Grafe; his children, Sherry Sorenson (Randy), Linda Landwehr (Paul), Deanna Jensen (Daryl), Stephanie Selby (Bill), Judd Grafe (Deanne), and Margo Grafe; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, dear friends, fellow veterans, colleagues, and members of the auction community whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
