Gregory Holmes

Gregory J. Holmes, 78 of Rochester, passed away on July 22, 2026. He was born September 18, 1947, in Rochester, MN to Gordon and Rita (Weinberger) Holmes Gregory graduated from Lourdes High School, forming the foundation of a life rooted in resilience and commitment. Shortly after high school, Gregory answered the call to service, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He served bravely as a Marine in Vietnam. For his service and sacrifice, he was a combat wounded veteran and a three-time Purple Heart recipient. He was married to Janie Volkring in 1970 in Rochester, and the couple later divorced.

After his military service, Gregory transitioned to a career with the post office. Over two decades of hard work and reliability culminated his early retirement, marking the end of a long and dedicated contribution to his community.

Gregory’s personal life was shaped by rich and lasting relationships. He was married to Rebecca Baack for 32 years.

Greg is survived by his wife Rebecca, sons Ryan Holmes of Byron and Cory Holmes of Rochester; and his grandson Quinten. Gregory’s brothers, David Holmes and Dennis Holmes, also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents

Those close to Gregory knew him as a thrill seeker, an outdoorsman at heart. His interests spanned traveling, hunting, fishing, gardening. He took great pride in home maintenance, A lover of motorcycles and all things adventurous, Gregory embraced life with enthusiasm and vitality.

Friends and family are invited to honor Gregory’s life at a memorial service to be held on August 15, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Rochester VFW, (2775 43rd Street Northwest), Rochester, MN 55901.
