Iris Mae Matthys

May 20, 1934 — Aug 1, 2026

Iris M. Matthys, 92, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 1, 2026.

Born Iris Mae Brusehaver on May 20, 1934, on the family farm in Florence Township, Goodhue County, she grew up with strong Midwestern values and a love of purposeful work. She attended school in Lake City and Red Wing, and after graduating from high school completed her studies at Minneapolis Business School. Iris began her career in Minneapolis and later moved to Rochester, where she served for many years as a bookkeeper and secretary with the Plunkett family law firm. Organized, reliable, and diligent, she brought integrity and care to every ledger and letter.

Iris's core essence was that of a caregiver. She poured that spirit into her family, her church, and her community. A resident of Rochester's Valhalla Condominiums for more than 40 years, Iris was a cherished pillar-someone neighbors counted on. She served on the board as secretary, she was an avid gardener tending the flowers, took pride in keeping common areas orderly and welcoming, and was always ready with a warm greeting or a helping hand. She also had a gentle, quick sense of humor that lightened moments and brought smiles to friends and family alike.

Faith guided Iris throughout her life. She was active at Resurrection Lutheran and Life Church, including the OWLS group, and she found joy in nurturing the church's flower gardens. Worship, fellowship, and service were part of her weekly rhythm.

Family remained at the center of Iris's life. She cherished time with her family, great nephews, and loved ones-playing cards, sharing meals, and rooting for them in all their endeavors. Thoughtful and encouraging, she cared in countless practical ways. Her kindness was constant; her support, unwavering.

Iris is survived by her sister, Gloria Biggerstaff of Apple Valley, MN; her niece, Ann (Brett) Gugino of Eagan, MN; her nephew, Mike Biggerstaff of Apple Valley, MN; and great-nephews Max Biggerstaff and Ethan, Gavin, and Mason Gugino. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Elda Brusehaver, and her brother-in-law, Dale Biggerstaff.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Resurrection Lutheran and Life Church, 4520 19th Ave. NW, Rochester, MN with a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing, MN.
