James Curtis Broadbent

Dr. James C. Broadbent, 98, of Rochester, MN died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN on May 5, 2021. He was born in Detroit, MI on March 29, 1923. In 1929 his family moved to Los Angeles, CA. He attended Pomona College and Stanford University, and in 1947 received the MD degree from that university. Following an internship at the LA County General Hospital he served 2 years as a medical officer in the Army of the US. In 1949 he began a Fellowship in Medicine at the Mayo Clinic and in 1953 joined the staff of the Clinic. In 1957 the American Board of Internal Medicine certified him, and in 1967 he achieved certification in the subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease. In 1972 he was appointed an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He retired in 1986. He was an avid general aviation pilot, and from 1966-1970 served as consultant to the Federal Aviation Administration. He was a member of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Cardiology. From 1984 to 1988 he served on the Board of the Rochester Area Family Y. In 1943 Dr. Broadbent married Edna F. Baily and they were blessed with 63 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; daughter, Eileen; brothers, Tom and Bill. He is survived by his five children, Steve (Kenna) Broadbent of Boston MA, Kathy Broadbent (Richard) of New Hope, MN, Rob (K'Lea) Broadbent of Victor, ID, John (Roxanne) Broadbent of Tampa, FL, and Jamie Broadbent of Portland, ME; six grandchildren, Laura, Elizabeth, Anastasia, Dan, Mike , Alex, and Grace; six great grandchildren, Xavier, Carmen Emre, Evie, and Maggie; extended family and caregiver of 14 years, Heidi Connelly.
