John Youngstrom

John (Jack) Youngstrom passed away on March 6th, 2024 at Madonna Towers Skilled Nursing Care. John Leroy Youngstrom was born May 27, 1939 to parents Clifford and Audrey (Mahlen) Youngstrom. He attended school in Wykoff, Minnesota and also Rush City, Minnesota . While at Rush City, he was an accomplished athlete. Playing football, basketball, and baseball. Following high school, he went on to the University of Minnesota, Duluth where he received a degree in secondary education in English and History. After graduating, he started his teaching career in Roseville, Minnesota where he taught junior high Geography. There he met and married Peggy Walker. After having taught, he went on to become an assistant principal at White Bear Lake Junior High for four years. While there, their two sons (Joe and Matt) were born. He was also a junior high principal in St. Peter, Minnesota for eight years. His final years in education were as a junior high and senior high principal in Winona, Minnesota.

Jack enjoyed the outdoors and University of Minnesota athletics - especially Golden Gopher basketball. Ski U Ma! An avid fisherman and duck hunter, he attended many hunting trips to North Dakota and fishing outings in northern Minnesota. He was a long-time member of Winona Kiwanis Club and Winona Area Ducks Unlimited. In retirement, he and Peggy moved to Rochester to be closer to family. They had the good fortune to travel to Europe and to winter in San Diego and Phoenix. He loved his family and will be remembered for his positive, can-do attitude.

Jack is survived by his children Joe (Darcy) Youngstrom of Rochester, MN and Matt (Amy) Youngstrom of Edina, MN; grandchildren Ryan, Kylee, Andrew and Nicholas; and brother, Mark (Mary) Youngstrom of Vadnais Heights, MN. He is preceded in death by his wife Peggy and parents Clifford and Audrey.

A celebration of life for both Peggy and Jack is planned for Saturday, July 20th at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN at 11:00 am.
