Karen Jane Burbank

Karen J. Burbank, 67, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026. Karen was born on July 26, 1958, in Rochester to Dr. Mahlon and Marilyn Burbank.

In her youth, Karen was an active Girl Scout and completed her Lutheran Confirmation in 1974.

She graduated from Mayo High School in 1977, where she was proud to participate in Rochester's first special education program and formed many lifelong friendships. Following graduation, Karen moved to Austin, Minnesota, to work for Cedar Valley Services. She embraced her community fully, joined the Austin Jaycee Women and earned the Spokette Award in 1981. Karen loved the Mower County Fair, where her creative talents frequently won "Premium" craft awards. In Austin, she also shared a 10-year marriage with her friend, Jim Sybilrud.

In 2010, Karen returned to Rochester. She continued her career with ABC Services until her well-earned retirement at age 65. Karen met her life's unique physical and cognitive challenges with quiet grace, a resilient spirit, and an unforgettable smile and positive attitude. Her independence and full life were made possible by the incredible support of the Mayo Clinic Neurology department, which provided cutting-edge care for her epilepsy. Karen made friends wherever she lived and worked, bringing joy to everyone she met at each of her group homes and workplaces. Her family is deeply grateful to Bear Creek Services and all of her special caregivers for their exceptional, loving care.

Karen possessed a wonderful belly laugh that could instantly light up a room. She was a woman of many passions: she loved reading World War II history books, learning about the government, reading Laura Ingalls Wilder stories, playing board games, and watching 1970s television shows. Her absolute favorite movie was The Sound of Music. She had a fantastic sense of humor, enjoyed jokes of all kinds, and eagerly anticipated Halloween each year. Nothing brought her a quicker smile than cookies, Reese's Pieces, or an iced latte with the whipped cream piled high.

Above all, family was Karen's heart. She possessed a remarkable memory for birthdays and was always the very first to call with well-wishes. She was immensely proud of her role as an aunt and loved sharing photos and stories of her family with everyone she met.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings Doug (Ashley)

Burbank of Houston, TX; Mark Burbank (Holly Corner) of Brier, WA; and Susan Burbank of Brier, WA; six cherished nieces and nephews, Elaine, Robert, Madison, Skyler, Sophie, and Jack; and her grandniece, Poppy.

A celebration of life service will be held on August 15, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, 5421 Royal Place NW, Rochester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bear Creek Services or a charity of the donor's choice.
