Karen N. Sheedy

Karen Rae Neumann Sheedy, age 84, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on August 28, surrounded by the family she spent her life nurturing. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that the love she gave so freely throughout her life remains with us and continues to shape who we are and how we live. Karen believed there was something greater beyond this life, and we trust that she has found peace in Heaven.

Karen was born on April 7, 1942 in Lansing, Michigan. She and her husband, Patrick, shared 61 years of a loving and devoted marriage. They balanced each other, loved one another for who they were, and together, they faced life as a team. They traveled together, shared many meals with others, and created family traditions that continue today. Their bond grew stronger with time, and in Karen's later years, Patrick was by her side as companion, caregiver, and a constant source of love and support.

Family was the center of Karen's life. She dedicated her life to ensuring those she loved were cared for, encouraged, and supported. Her grandchildren had their own special names for her: Mom, Little Ga, and Ita. Each name reflected a unique relationship, but all were connected by the same unwavering devotion. Through life's greatest celebrations and its deepest hardships, her unconditional love provided both a place of joy and a place of refuge. Her family was strengthened by her presence, and the example she set will continue to guide them for generations to come.

Karen's friendships were as meaningful to her as the bonds she shared with her family. She possessed a quiet strength and a generous spirit and though she was often the one helping others through difficult times, she was blessed with friends who stood by her side when she needed it most. She and her friends knew they could depend upon one another for understanding and compassion. The enduring friendships she cultivated throughout life are a testament to her loyalty, kindness, and the deep care she shared with those around her.

Karen's compassion extended beyond those closest to her. Through her work in teaching and social services, as well as her extensive volunteer service, she dedicated herself to understanding and helping others. She possessed a rare gift: she was genuinely interested in people. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or someone she had just met, Karen listened with curiosity, empathy, and respect. She had a way of making people feel heard and valued. In just a few moments of conversation, she would learn someone's story because to her, that story mattered.

Those who knew Karen will remember her radiant smile, keen sense of humor, steadfast nature, and her boundless capacity for caring. She taught us that kindness is not always measured by grand gestures, but by the countless small acts of love and support we offer one another each day. The legacy she leaves behind is not found in possessions or accomplishments, but in her family, in the lives she touched, in the people she lifted up, and in the love she shared so freely.

Karen is survived by her brother Kurt Neumann; her husband Patrick; her four children and their spouses, Kerry (Edward Todd), Patrick (Jennis Joa), Michael (Emily Sheedy), and Shannon (Paul Roach); and her eight beloved grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Betty and "Red" Neumann, and by her first grandchild, Patrick Todd, whom she loved dearly.

The greatest way to honor her memory is to follow the example she set for us: support one another, listen with compassion, and leave every person you meet feeling a little more valued than before.

A small private family ceremony will be held to celebrate Karen's life and bid her a final farewell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at michealjfox.org.
