Katherine Mary Tanner, 82, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, at Madonna Towers, surrounded by love and family.
Katherine was born on November 17, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Aloys and Mary (Gibbons) Poncinie. Her life was one of adventure and deep connections, shaped by her family's moves to many different states and even abroad to Frankfurt, Germany. These experiences gave her a curious spirit and a love of new places and people. Katherine later married Bill Tanner, and the couple later lived in Braselton, Georgia. Bill's passing in 2005 left a space in Katherine's heart that was never fully filled, but she carried his memory with her always.
Katherine had a long and fulfilling career as a legal secretary, where her warmth and attention to detail touched many lives. In 2012, she moved to Madonna Towers in Rochester, MN, where she found a community of friends and caregivers who loved her dearly.
She was a proud and doting grandmother, happiest in the stands cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. Katherine was known for her unforgettable laugh-a sound that could brighten any room. She had a passion for collecting model trains, and playing games with family and friends.
Katherine leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and laughter. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Tanner; her parents, Aloys and Mary Poncinie; siblings, Allan Poncinie, Larry Poncinie, Dick Poncinie and Mary LaPato; and a grandson, James Barker. Katherine is survived by her cherished family, including her children, Julie (Jeff) Austin, Michele Barker, and David Van Eycke ; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister, Joan LaPato; and many dear friends who will miss her deeply.
A service to celebrate Katherine's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes (5421 Royal Pl. NW Rochester, MN 55901). There will be a visitation beginning one hour prior to the service.
