It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Kenneth L. Sahs of Rochester, Minnesota, on May 12, 2025. He was surrounded by family and by love, just as he had been throughout his remarkable lifetime.
Ken was born March 13, 1936, in Hawkeye, Iowa, to Lorenz and Helen Sahs and spent his early years in Oelwein, Iowa, and temporarily in Pacific Beach, California, since his father served in the Navy. Excelling in athletic and academic arenas, Ken was a star guard in basketball and quarterback in football at Oelwein High School, earning recognition for his skill, determination, and sportsmanship. His basketball team reached the Iowa state high school tournament in 1953. His passion for sports continued throughout his life, and he remained a top-notch tennis and volleyball player well into his later years. Ken was very competitive, winning many trophies and awards, but always played fair with respect and grace, win or lose.
Ken pursued his education at the University of Iowa, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1960 at the top of his class and moved to Rochester to join a dental practice downtown. His commitment to professionalism and his patients led him to open his own practice, Northwest Dental Group, with two partner dentists in Rochester in 1965, where he provided compassionate and expert care for decades.
On June 16, 1957, Ken married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Hintz. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared experiences. They raised their two sons, Jon and Scott, instilling in them an appreciation for learning, character, adventure, and the beauty of nature.
Ken had a deep love for the outdoors, finding joy in all seasons - especially winter. He was an avid snowmobiler, embracing the thrill and freedom of exploring in the snow. His enthusiasm for nature went beyond winter sports, as he cherished time spent outdoors in any setting. He had a passion for travel, embarking on extended car trips with his family across the U.S. and Canada which created so many cherished memories, stories and photos.
Beyond professional and athletic pursuits, Ken was great with his hands and very creative in his woodworking, crafting beautiful sculptures, furniture and picture frames. Ken was a master handyman, never afraid to tackle any home repair project. He had expertise in cars and car culture and enjoyed tinkering with all mechanical things. Ken's love for speed translated into a passion for professional motorsports and regularly took the family to Road America in Wisconsin to witness the glory days of Can-Am, Trans Am and world-famous drivers. His skills in photography are legendary, and he leaves behind thousands of nature, family and action photos of the world as seen through his eyes.
Ken is survived by his sons Jon (Patty) and Scott (Maureen), his grandchildren Justin, Colin (Shannon), Ali (Brian) and Zach, as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was blessed to gain bonus grandchildren in Courtney (John), Kayla and Carter as well as one great-grandchild Madelyn. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and sister. His legacy of warmth, curiosity, and generosity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind lifelong friendships in the dental community, with coworkers, patients, neighbors, tennis and snowmobiling partners, and at his new home the Waters on Mayowood. The family would like to thank and show their appreciation for the staff from The Waters, Rochester East Health Services, and the Mayo Hospice and Palliative teams who provided such loving care for Ken.
Per his wishes, a private service will be held by his family. To honor Ken's lifelong dedication to volunteering and service organizations, donations may be made in his name to Kiwanis International organization or the Community Dental Clinic.
As we celebrate Ken's life, let us remember his passion for adventure, his unwavering love for family, and the incredible impact he had on those around him. Raise a glass of Mello Yello in his honor, take the long and winding road with the top down, and carry forward the kindness and joy he so effortlessly shared with the world.
Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Sahs family.
