Steve Ransom of Rochester Minnesota passed away at Methodist Hospital on June 6th 2026. He was surrounded by his family. He battled Leukemia and Lymphoma with great attitude and a dimpled smile, however, cancer won out in the end.
Steve was born in Racine WI on September 7th 1956 to Claude and Jeanette Ransom. His childhood was full of learning to cook from his Mom and working at his Dad's eyeglass business. He graduated from William Horlick High School in 1974. Steve went into college already having found a love for computers. He graduated with a degree in Computer Science from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1978.
His first job out of college brought him to IBM in Rochester MN. He would continue to work at IBM for the next 35 years, with his skills and experience growing as fast as technology did over that time. Whether he was traveling within and outside the US to conduct security audits or being a webmaster during a time that the Internet boomed, Steve loved learning new things and working in a team. He specialized in the implementation of large projects over multiple sites and never met a spreadsheet he didn't like.
Steve's love of project management eventually brought him to the Mayo Clinic, where he spent 5 years on a team implementing the electronic medical record. While retirement did offer more time to read and be with family, Steve loved teamwork and continued to work part-time at Mayo Clinic's Rejuvenate Spa.
Steve met his wife Julie during his first week of IBM, where they both worked. They married on May 10th 1980. Through their 46 years of marriage, they traveled the world from South Africa to Alaska, enjoyed all forms of wildlife, and playing with their daughter and eventually grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife Julie of Rochester, daughter and son-in-law, Jessica (Christopher) Morger of Duluth, two grandchildren Theodore and Evie Morger, one brother Jack (Susan) Ransom of Yuma Arizona, two sisters Patricia Ransom of Muskego Wisconsin and Teresa Flether of Muskego Wisconsin, and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and baby sister, Janice.
A Celebration of Life for Steve Ransom will be held on Saturday, June 20th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at Charter House in the Edwards Hall. The address is 211 2nd St. NW Rochester, MN 55901. Please bring a fun story to share. We'll miss this Good Guy!
