Sally (Vercella) Hemenway, a dedicated educator and lifelong adventurer, passed away peacefully January 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, learning, and love.
Born in 1938 in Luverne, Minnesota, to Alvin Olson and Thilda Knudtson, Sally's journey began in the heart of the Midwest. After graduating from Luverne High School, she followed her passion for education to Mankato State University. It was there, on the university tennis courts, that she met the love of her life, George Hemenway. Their meeting sparked a partnership that spanned 65 years and took them across the globe.
Sally's professional calling was shaped in the classroom. For 39 years, she served as a foundational influence for countless children, teaching kindergarten through second grade. Her career took her through the school districts of Long Prairie, Mound, Kasson, and Stewartville, where she was known for her patience, creativity, and her unwavering belief in her students' potential.
Beyond the classroom, Sally embraced life with enthusiasm. Alongside George, she traveled the world, exploring new cultures and landscapes. She was deeply rooted in her community as an active member of her church and a proud member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary organization for women educators. Above all, Sally cherished the time spent with her family and friends.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Olson and Thilda Knudtson, and her sisters, Norma Olson and Ardis Thorogood.
She is survived by her devoted husband, George Hemenway; her son, Paul Hemenway, and daughter-in-law, Jessica Hemenway; and her two beloved grandchildren, Eva and Austin Hemenway, who were the light of her life.
Celebration of Life service details are currently pending.
