William Elder Hammer

May 1, 1936 — Jul 20, 2026

William Elder Hammer, 90, of Rochester, Minnesota, passed away at his home on July 20, 2026 surrounded by his family.

William was born on May 1, 1936, in Brooten, Minnesota, to George and Elsie (Windhorst) Hammer. He grew up in west-central Minnesota until the age of 14, when his family moved to Chicago. After graduating from high school, William served his country in the United States Army for two years. Following his military service, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois. After graduating, William married his first love, Louise Brock. Together they made their home in Rochester, where William enjoyed a successful 38-year career as an electrical engineer with IBM.

Not one to sit still in retirement, William enjoyed traveling, golfing, biking, skiing, hiking, birdwatching, enjoying a glass of red wine, and serving others. Above all else, he treasured spending time with his family and friends. Together, he and Louise shared 46 wonderful years of marriage, until her passing in 2004. In later years, William was blessed with the companionship of his special friend, Marie Nepper, whose friendship brought him great joy until her passing.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Steve) Westlie and Judy (Steve) Johnson; his son-in-law, Jamie Nixon; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Katheryn "K" Glen and Marcia Oja; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise Hammer; his daughter, Marcia (Hammer) Nixon; his parents, George and Elsie Hammer; his sister, Mariann Goslovich; and his special friend, Marie Nepper.
