A celebration of life for Daniel J. Sargent, 46, of Rochester will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Christ United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Daniels burial will be at Oronoco Cemetery.

Daniel Jay Sargent was born on August 22, 1970 in Red Wing to Forrest and Faye (Krogh) Sargent. He grew up in Red Wing until the age of 9 years, when he and his family moved to Rochester to start Sargents Landscape Nursery. In high school he met his wife, Becky Warner. They were high school sweethearts and went on to attend college together at the University of Minnesota. On August 21, 1993 they were married in his parents beautiful backyard on a sunny afternoon.

On September 22, 2016 Daniel passed away unexpectedly following an acute illness at St. Marys Hospital.

Daniel graduated from John Marshall High School in 1988 and received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Statistics from the University of Minnesota. As the Ralph and Beverly Caulkins Professor of Cancer Research, he was appointed as the new chair of the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics on September 6, 2016. Dr. Sargent was a consultant in the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics, held the dual academic rank of Professor of Biostatistics and Oncology, has served as the Section head for the Section of Cancer Center Statistics since 2001, and has been a member of the Mayo Clinic Staff since 1996. Dans research was in the area of oncology clinical trials, where he served as the Group Statistician for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, a leading National Cancer Institute funded oncology clinical trials group. Dan also led multiple international groups including ACCENT in adjuvant colon cancer, the prospective IDEA in colon cancer, and the FLASH international consortia in Follicular Lymphoma. Dr. Sargent is published extensively in colorectal cancer treatment, optimal clinical trial design and endpoints, and prognostic and predictive biomarkers.

While Dan was very accomplished in his professional career, he knew what was truly important in life and he treasured his family and friends, making sure that he always put them first. He enjoyed traveling abroad and exploring new places with Becky and their children. You could often find him enjoying the outdoors, downhill or cross-country skiing, hiking up north with his family, playing tennis, or cheering on his children, Alec and Paige, during their tennis matches, or fishing and playing golf with his son.

Survivors include his wife Becky Sargent and their children, Alec Reed Sargent and Paige Kathryn Sargent; his brother Nicholas and Nina Sargent and their children Sophie, Max, and Jay; his parents Forrest and Faye Sargent and his in-laws, Jerry and Barb Warner. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Maxwell and Carol Sargent and Leo and Della Krogh.

A memorial scholarship is being set up in Daniels name to honor him, by his friends and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic. To contribute to this memorial, visit the Mayo Clinic Department of Development or https://philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/. It is important to designate Daniel Sargent fund.

I knew Dan from our shared interest and commitment to high quality clinical trials. I am a long time member of SCT and always, always sought out Dan at the SCT meetings to speak with him and pick his brain. He reached to me when I came to visit at Mayo a few years ago and made me feel welcome. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with him in his home environment and talk about all the exciting activities he was involved in. I am proud to have known Dan. All my condolences to you. I hope that you will find comfort in knowing what a special person he was to so many people, the lives he touched, and the contributions he made to improving the public's health during his time in this world.

Dear Becky and Family,

My deepest condolences on your devastating loss. Please note that you are in our thoughts during this difficult time. Dan was a great leader and he will be definitely missed.

To Dan's loving family,
It is difficult to express the enormous sense of loss from Dan's untimely passing. He had a brilliant mind, a warm heart, and a huge sense of generosity to others. He has touched and impacted so many lives, countless lives of cancer patients around the world and of all of us whom he challenged to think critically but imaginatively to advance the science of oncology. We will miss him very, very much.

Dear Becky,

I am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I was getting my masters degree when he was getting his Ph.D. at the U, and he was so kind and helpful to me. I was lucky to have our association continue as I work for ACRIN, one of the NCI's clinical trials groups, and Dan served as chair of our DSMC for several years. His dedication to service, and all of the research he supervised, have helped millions of cancer patients. His death is a loss to the whole world.

Still, despite the enormity of his contribution to science and medicine, what I remember most was how he spoke about you. We did not have a lot of time to engage in chit chat, but he did speak of you often, with such remarkably deep love.

My love and prayers are with you and your children.

It is always difficult to deal with the loss of someone right at the peak of his life and career. Dan was a great leader in the clinical trials profession, first as a biostatistician and then, and more prominently, as one who provided national and international leadership among his peers. Our paths crossed in person a relatively few times, at professional meetings, but it was always a treat to greet him and learn about what good work he was involved in. I never saw him without a smile, and I never heard anything but praise and admiration for him from others.

We were with Chris (Our son and Dan's friend through high school) today and he told me with much sadness of Dan's passing. Becky and family, we are so sad for all of you and can only think of Dan as a teen who would only eat cheese on his pizza; so, when the gang was at our house and hungry we would order a Dan Special just for him. He will always be a happy teen in our minds. God bless you and your family during this time.

R Ramses Sadek on Sep 30, 2016

I worked with Dan and like so many others was completely shocked by news of his death. In addition to the good professional memories, one personal memory is of having breakfast with my wife (also an oncologist) and our then 2 year old, rather restless son at ESMO (in Stockholm, i think). Dan joined us for a very pleasant breakfast but completely charmed Jonathan by letting him play with his phone - a small but lovely and typical touch.

E Erik Mundahl on Sep 29, 2016

Thoughts and prayers are with all of you - my heart breaks knowing that the family is grieving the loss of a father, friend, and colleague. For me, Dan was a grade school friend. He showed the makings of someone special at a young age - his intellectual curiosity evident in how he conducted himself in school. He was naturally gifted - but was never one to boast or act arrogant. He was kind and generous with those that were lucky to call him "friend" and I feel fortunate that our paths crossed during this time. My hope is that you and your family will find comfort knowing that Dan touched the lives of so many people in his brief time with us. He was truly one of a kind - and I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to know him.

A April & Dave Wiesner on Sep 28, 2016

Becky, Alec, and Paige,
Upon hearing that your husband and father was taken from your lives, the lyrics from the hit number For Good written by composer Stephen Schwartz for the stunning Broadway musical Wicked were the first to enter my mind.

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them...

So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend...

I do believe I have been
Changed for the better
And because I knew you
I have been changed for good...

I am sure there are many others who can relate to this. You should know that Dan was loved and respected so very much and he often expressed his deep love for you.

I was lucky to have crossed paths with Dan during his short life. Ill always remember his soft eyes, his humor, his gentleness as a mentor, and his inexplicable intelligence. He was one of Gods masterpieces.

C Chris Vanderlinden on Sep 28, 2016

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Danny. He was a childhood friend of mine in Red Wing--he's always been a great person. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dan was an outstanding scientist and a dear friend for his colleagues all around the world.
I remember well when he and Becky visited Northern Italy in July 2009 and he had an excellent talk here in Bergamo: all the attendants admired his science, but also his smile and friendship.
Also on behalf of GISCAD researchers in Italy, I want to express to his wife and kids my most sincere condolences: I am sure that Dan will continue to live in our ideas and work.

Dear Dan,

We miss you already. Nobody was prepared for your sudden departure last September 22nd. Our thoughts go to your family, your wife, and your two children.

We cannot thank you enough for everything you did with, and for us. Many will highlight your brilliant scientific achievements and your increasingly essential involvement in cancer research at Mayo Clinic, the United States, and worldwide, but first and foremost we are thinking of you as a friend and colleague of utmost integrity, wisdom and sense of diplomacy which could bring people together to advance science.

We embarked together in the great adventures of ACCENT, ARCAD and IDEA. Their success has been made possible by our great admiration for your work, our excitement to meet, and our pleasure to prolong formal meetings into more personal exchanges. Altogether, it has been made possible by a deep and creative friendship nurtured by your listening skills and understanding, your unwavering dedication, and your superior ability to manage projects with the brilliant young team that you created. You have been the cement of our achievements. Displaying such leadership is truly exceptional.

It is still unclear what is to come. However, we are committed to pursuing our work with the same constructive and open spirit you have always championed. It is your legacy, which we will continue to grow as if you were still amongst us.

With our deep affection,

My deepest sympathies to the entire family. I have worked in the Cancer Center directly and indirectly with Dan since 2005. Despite any challenges that were presented to him, he handled those challenges with grace and a smile. He will truly be missed. His contributions to cancer research have been a benefit to so many. His knowledge and experience has been an asset to ACCRU, NCCTG, Alliance, the Cancer Center and Mayo Clinic (to name a few). You can be proud of the man you call husband, father and son. Dear Becky,
Im completely in shock, I cannot realize. Im in mourning with you all.
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity of meeting Dan during the last 6 years. Beyond his exceptional scientific qualities, I have been moved by his way of being as a person, at work, at home, with his friends, or with the people he met.
He is a man who makes me desire to be a better person.
I remember how, despite his busy schedule, he was always actively and fully present to the people in front of him, making people feel at ease (such as inviting Darth Vador in the first minutes of the discussion in his office!), able to really listen to other people points of view, helping people to move forward, to grow. He has been a real mentor to me, not only because he was smart, but through his positive attitude, his humility, his open mindedness, his kindness.
Dan would devote time and energy to build relationships within the team, to make team networks planetwide. He would delegate to people, keeping an active eye on the projects, and supporting people when needed.
I remember his smiling eyes.
Dan has opened the door of his lab to me, but also the door of his house, your house Becky, to me, my family, my students and colleagues. We are collectively grateful to him, to you all, for your welcoming attitude.
I know that Dan loved to travel and visit people all over the world, especially when you could come with him. Dear Becky, you are very welcome to visit us in France.
I pray with you, Becky, Alec and Paige, with your family, your friends.

Dear Dan,
It is hard to believe that you had left.
Just a few days ago, you were traveling to Duke to attend the Duke-Industry Statistics Symposium. As expected, your talks on the collaboration between industry, academia and government to facilitate drug developments and on the initiatives in precision medicine in cancer research had drawn a large crowd. Just a few days ago, you were having dinner with us, talking about progress at Alliance Statistical Center, and sharing your interesting vacation stories.
Our interaction began a few years ago when CALGB was merged with NCCTG and ASCOSOG. It is our great honor to have you as our grant consultant; it was your persistent support that helped our elderly lung cancer project funded. In the few years, we were so fortunate to have you as collaborator and mentor on some research projects. We had found it was so fun and productive working with you. We were always amazed by your thoughtful comments on our collaborative manuscripts and the full-page handwritten notes you wrote down on air planes. Your positive attitudes and vision had always motivated us to achieve something at a higher level. To us, you are a true role model for the statisticians working in cancer and medicine. The precious memories working with you as colleagues will forever stay with us.

The death of my friend and colleague Dan Sargent is shocking and heartbreaking. Dan chose a career path that allowed his ample analytical skills to be used very directly to help better human health, and specifically, to combat cancer. Statisticians are supposed to be 'neutral,' but they can still be passionate, and Dan clearly had passion with respect to trying to defeat cancer. As a fellow statistician, I admire how he combined his statistical knowledge and wisdom with this passion, to advance this cause. His example inspires me.

Dear Dan,

I am writing this message as I am still trying to recover from the news you passed away on September 22. The world has been shocked to hear the news, and overwhelmed by grief since. For those of us who had the privilege of working with you, you were far more than a colleague: a personal friend, whom we enjoyed being with and having fun with.

Whenever you got involved in a research group, you would soon be its most active and productive member. Ive often wondered how you could achieve so much without ever appearing overloaded or concerned. You just made things happen with strength and grace. You had a unique talent to understand and explain, as well as to unite and motivate. I felt smarter when you were present, awed by your intellect and humbled by your modesty. It is your smile I will remember, above all else.

My thoughts go to Becky, Alec and Paige, whom I had a chance to meet two years ago. In their sorrow, I hope they will find some comfort in the multitude of heartfelt messages in your memory from all over the world. And I am sure they will be as proud of you as you were of them.

Ill miss you at the oncology and statistical meetings we used to attend together, Dan, but youll be with me and your other friends forever. Youve changed us all for the better.

Marc Buyse,
IDDI, San Francisco

I have known Dan for over 15 years. I first met him through Sam Wieand. I just had dinner with Dan and others in his group at the JSM in Chicago in August. Dan insisted on picking up the tab.

Dan was a true star in both the statistical and clinical trials communities. In addition to having a brilliant and creative mind, Dan was a kind and generous soul. He will be sorely missed by me and many, many others in our field.

In the last 5 years I was blessed to meet and work with Dan even if just for a few days and occasions.
An incredibly brilliant mind, with great heart.
For me, an example of will and determination.... With a great sense of humor.

I will truly miss him!

To Becky, Alec and Page my condolences. May God comfort you!
I am sure he has been a great husband and a great father, as he has been a great scientist.
Dan will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us.

Cristina

I am so very sorry about Dan's loss. I can not express the depth of my sorrow over this sudden loss. Dan was an example, an idol for me, all our meetings were impressive for me. He accepted to meet me with a big smile for the first time in his office when I was a student. He listened to my projects with a big attention, and he advised me and shared his experience with me. I am so grateful. Thank you Dan!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
