David George Scherer, age 71, peacefully passed away on February 18, 2023 at his home in Rochester, MN. He survived almost 30 years of compounding heart issues and his heart finally tired out. His family would joke that he had 9 lives because he could have passed on several occasions due to his "big heart". His hilarious dad jokes, love for all Minnesota sports (even with perpetual disappointment), and his endless love for his family is what kept his heart beating for the last 30 years. He made it long enough to walk his youngest daughter down the aisle and see his middle and eldest children have children of their own. These milestones were dreams of his to experience in his lifetime.

David was born on September 21, 1951 and raised in Rochester, MN. He graduated as a proud Rocket from John Marshall in 1969. While excelling in beer league softball for years, he also became a renowned CRNA at The Mayo Clinic. After 30 successful years, he was able to enjoy an early retirement in 2007. Some of his favorite pastimes over the years were: attending Katy's basketball and soccer games, family vacations to national parks, reading, playing with his grandchildren, watching any and all sports with his dogs, gardening, and most of all being a loving father to his children and "Boppie" to his grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife, Vandela; children Katy (Sean) Endersbe, Michelle (Ross) Capelle and Sean; sister Judy (Larry) Behnken; niece Jennifer; nephews Jonathan and Daniel; 14 great nieces and nephews; and his beloved grandchildren Harper, Lauren, Molly, and Jacob.

David is preceded in death by his mother Leola and father Daniel.

A memorial service will be held at Evangel United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11am. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the chuch. A celebration of his life will follow at Whistle Binkies North with a few of his favorites: tacos and margaritas.

Dear Van & Fam……the loss of my best friend Dave has hit me to my core. I know he wasn’t feeling well in the past few months during our daily texts to one another but he was always a bright ray of sunshine in my otherwise ordinary day…..Marlea & I were so happy that he could march his beautiful daughter down the aisle on New Years Eve. Katy, as you know, your father was an exceptional Dad as well liked as any person I’ve ever known. Marlea & I enjoyed our nearly 20 years of being next door neighbors and friends with Van & Dave. Wonderful times! Joe and Marlea Judd

I played soccer and lived with Katy in college at UST. David and Vandela came to almost every single one of our games and would invite me to join them out eat with them after the games. My parents were out of state and David & Vandela truly served as my substitute parents when mine couldn’t be there. It meant so much to me then and still does today. David’s kindness and love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. Thinking about the Scherer family as we remember and celebrate David’s life.

Good memories of Dave, when I was a kid he hung around with Brian Boe across the street neighbor. Then later I saw him a lot at work. I’m sure he didn’t remember who I am. Any good memories of him. Very sorry for your loss . Sincerely, Mike Trusty

Dave was my preceptor in anesthesia school. He was a great teacher, always very calm. He was also a great person and friend. Vandela & Katie, I am so very very sorry for your loss..
